Hey, just looking at your casual lists,(what I'm mostly interested in). I noticed you have included a Techmarine in both, I was trying to fit one into a list the other, but i was kind of stuck trying to find a use for it, as it is a 'jack-of-all-trades master-of-none' character. What role do you use him in?
ReplyDeleteWelcome to my Blog! The reason I put in a Techmarine is because every time I look at the drawing of one in the Codex (on the opposite page of the Crusader Squad) I think, "that just looks so cool". I don't know exactly what it is, but I know that the legs are part of it. And in the lists above I can fit him in without too much fuss and he should go nicely (no play-testing to verify though).
ReplyDeleteThey work best in one of three roles, the first is as a close combat Independent Character to help out a Crusader Squad. Grab him a Servo-Harness, Bolt Pistol, and maybe a Storm Shield if you have the points, and he fills that role quite nicely. Not quite as well as something like a Marshal with Lightning Claw and Storm Shield (lower WS, Initiative) but adds a few benefits like a TL-Plasma Pistol and a Flamer (both of which he can fire) and you can take an extra three of them this way.
Another way is taking him with some Servitors. All Close Combat Servitors isn't a good idea since you can basically take Assault Terminators for near the same price but better and more durable. The best set-up is two Gun Servitors with either Multi-Meltas or Plasma Cannons, put them in a Rhino, maybe get a couple of Tech Servitors (the extra bonus on rolls potentially could keep your Rhino alive longer if it starts taking Immobilized/Weapon destroyed results), and you have an effective bunker/fire-support unit. You could go for four Gun Servitors all armed with Plasma Cannons (don't consider Heavy Bolters, they aren't a very good option anyway and they are just expensive when taken through Servitors) to act as a sort of Devastator squad, but it isn't a good idea since it's fairly vulnerable and gets really, really expensive. This option is pretty good, but it's really out-shined by both Dreadnoughts and Terminators.
The third and final way is one that Stelek suggested in one of his lists just recently on YesTheTruthHurts (I don't think you've visited it, and I don't think either that you'd like it, but now you know that it's there). I've seen similar ideas on B&C, and I'm not a fan of it in general. The idea is to give the Techmarine some special piece of equipment, such as Combi-Meltas (helpful when used in conjunction with a Meltagun from a Rhino) or Holy Orbs. Both times it's been combined with taking two Castellans and having three Techmarines all taking that same piece of equipment. Again, I don't really like this way because it forces you to spend a lot of points on Independent Characters which limits the rest of your list, but the Holy Orb idea is apparently quite fun.
Thanks, I've just read this after my own blog post on him, but its given me a bit more info. And yes I've been on Stelek's blog, but like you said, its not really my type of blog. :)
ReplyDeleteI looked at his Tyranid posts in the archives. So long as he isn't talking about anything anyone else has done, he's not bad to read and there are some good gems in there.
